Decided to look around the in-laws yard while kids were playing. If what I have found online is correct this is not one of the more common ones.

BACK: STEELE * & * JOHNSON * & *
FRONT: EXCELSIOR below the Eagle over Shield state seal
Very little gilt left
shank slightly bent

Again, if research is correct this should be a Tice NY220O1 ?

Last weekend I spent 5 hours on a "sure thing" researched park from late 1800's and didn't find anything. Tonight I have 5 minutes in the yard and I find this. I love this hobby!

I don't know about the rarity, but I find quite a few New Yorks in Virginia, and yours looks slightly different, so fingers crossed. Really nice button and excellent condition!

In Albert's Bicentennial edition of his button book, he says there were over 50 known varieties of your button with the earliest being from 1850's. Congrats on a nice NY button.
