There used to be a few houses on stilts here not too long ago, then Sandy came and knocked many of them into the sea. Go out in a kayak at low tide and you can still see/find artifacts leftover from the destruction. These stairs for example...

Here in Colorado folks like to build no matter what the consequence is in heavy mountain forests. Along the mid-western Mississippi valley the native Americans suggested to the early pioneer farmers it's not such a good idea to plant your crops so close to the river. The farmers reply was, "what do ya mean Indian", I'm at least a mile away from that river. Some places just can't stand up to mother nature, but heck that won't stop anyone from trying to defeat her. No telling whats more to come in the way of a natural disaster before I'm gone? The Yellowstone Caldera ? or maybe the New Madrid Fault

I'm sure what ever it is, they'll be a lot a folks living close by.
