Offering Computer Tech Assistance....

Well I've had several people tell me over the last year or so that I should offer to help people with their computer issues.
I will sometimes offer to help friends or family with their computer problems, but I can normally only do this if they live close to me.
But last year, I started using a program called TeamViewer to remotely connect to my friends computers and work on their computers for them, no matter how far away they live from me. So far, I've helped a friend in Texas, an old friend in Springfield, and a friend over in the United Kingdom. It's kinda fun for me, and I get to help people with their computer problems... which I understand can be frustrating if you don't know much about computers.

So with that being said, I'm offering my help to anyone who needs it. Whether it's something small that only takes a few minutes, or something that might take several hours. Of course I can only do this based on my schedule. I'm usually free after 3pm EST during the weekdays, and normally free on the weekends (spare for church on Sunday morning & evenings)
My only requirement is for you to be running Windows 7, Vista, or XP. Though I've did it before for someone I was once close with, I don't work on Mac's. I can only work on software issues as well. So if it's a (physical) hardware issue or something beyond my capability to fix, I likely won't be able to help.

As for payment... I've yet to charge anyone anything before. One of my friends did make a very nice handmade deer antler knife with an arrow head for me, and another friend sent me a Roman coin along with a hammered coin from the UK. I don't require anyone to send me anything, but if you want to, it's fun to receive neat stuff. I just mainly want to help people if they're having problems with their computers... since it's a talent God's given me.

Well because of things changing quite a bit in my life recently, I have alot of free time to blow after work... especially this Summer.
I guess I just want to see God make good of the bad in my life... and I enjoy helping others.
I'm sure I won't be able to help everyone all at once, but I can at least try to help one at a time.

I too work on computers and do so for a living, used to be a Cnet answer freak years back. I check here for anyone asking for help but didn't see any so perhaps your post will get others to ask Team viewer is much more flexible than Windows Remote for sure. Been working on computers for 13-14 years now and do network security, albeit not my cup of tea and graphics. If you've seen the Malwarbytes "MBAM" icon, that's mine. Alien Arena logo, mine, etc... I've done a lot over the years and that's more my passion now than repair but must keep up due to $$ Wish there was a computer thread for just PC stuff\help but it is an antique forum. Either way, I too would be glad to help. I won't likely do the remote help but I will answer whatever I can.

Cool... it's nice to meet another techie. I've never really gotten fully into IT type stuff, though the guys in my IT department at work asked me if I had a background in it 'cause I was trying to resolve some issues for them that came up with one of our core programs on our VPN. I think it's just another interest I have on top of everything else. That's cool about the logos... I believe I'm familiar with all of them. I never bothered to mess with Windows Remote. Guess I came across TeamViewer one day and realized what I could do with it, so I started using it to try and help people. I know it's not something I can do all day every day, but if it helps someone understand something or get things to where they need to be on their system... I'm willing. That's one thing about TeamViewer though... I'm not as good at "telling" someone all the steps to do, because most people tend to get confused fairly easily. I have to deal with enough people like that every day at work... so being able to actually show someone usually helps them to understand how to do stuff on their own later. Usually anyway...

Very true Bran and the remote is excellent for things like that and is definitely better than trying to explain things. Of course there are many times when remote can't be used for numerous issues but for the most part, it's the future of repair. I think when PC's get away from hardware restraints and are focused on the cloud, "not saying I like the idea for many reasons" but remote assistance will probably the only assistance needed.

What you or others have on your own computers are your own business. Like I've told others... I'll only try to fix what's wrong.
Now if going to specific sites like that is what's causing your problems... you're on your own my friend.

That is a good point though and why many won't have me connect to their computers, fear of intrusion in one form or another which is why I don't usually use it, not saying "I" wouldn't use it because it's easier than me running 10 miles to fix a pc, just that it isn't allowed by others. My son and I use Teamviewer and a few others I know and it comes in handy; prior, I used remote assistance. Teamviewer does allow you to choose what you let the other person do, either just allow them to do whatever or you have to OK what they do. In that respect, if you don't know about computers, that wouldn't be much of a security anyway not knowing what to allow or not.

Issues with what people do online is their business, however, I have rules when I work on a computer at my home or remotely, if I find kiddy porn or something to do with children, and I don't mean someone who took a pic of their baby's bottom, I mean something nasty, I will turn them in faster than you can blink. It wouldn't matter if it was my best friend or relative, that's crossing the line. I think most techs agree in that regard.

Back to point, it's a very touchy subject which is why personally I would rather answer through a forum or chat but Bran's method is excellent in many ways too, I just think there is a gray area that needs to get filled before it's accepted by others. If you know people in your area or such, it may not be such a big deal but when you are on the internet, yep, people are going to be a bit afraid to let a stranger access their pc.

One last point here, if I was to go by my security training, I would say never let anyone access your pc that you absolutely do not know or even some you do. However, I know that's not always the case, people need help, remote can be great and by no means am I saying Bran has bad intentions, none whatsoever, what I am saying is, caution is definitely a factor and smart move. It's all a matter of personal choice.
