Hey folks...I could really use some help with this one. Found this today while digging an old cellar hole. I tried to scan the back for you, but it just wont come out. The back has old english style writing that I think says " _ _ _ Big Gilt" and then in normal writing it says Colouh. Any help is appreciated!

Happy Hunting

Maybe civilian mid 1800,s Great button never the less

I agree...

The "gilt" and "best quality" or :standard colour" are not back marks, but considered quality marks. They were common from the late 1790s and for the next 100 years. The quality marks such as "treble gilt", "superior quality", and orange colour" along with many other variations were designed to give some indication to the buyer that the buttons were of the highest standard, triple gilt plated, and of superior quality. It was kind of like the more modern "new & improved".

It's a really nice one-piece civilian "flower" button maybe early to mid 1800s IMO.
