Old buckle identification needed

Dug this buckle yesterday in a historic area of a St. Louis County town.
Any idea what it was used for?
Appears to be made of iron. Thanks!

Based on it's size and shape (which is unusual) I'm thinking it's 'suspender related'.

Not found in water but the area was saturated and muddy.
