Old Flat button need help with back mark

Dug this flat button yesterday that says "TOPS GILT" on it with little stars around it separating the 2 words. I was hoping someone could tell me something about it, like what does the "TOPS" mean and how old might the button be. Thanks! Hi; Yours is a 1 Piece button predating 1820. "Tops" is simply the manufacturers way of saying " the Best" Gilt ok. Nice Find. PEACE:RONB

These types were really popular 1810 to about 1830. After that, the two piece button came in vogue. The most elaborate non military buttons ever were made in the 18th century.
