I found this nice old jug a few days ago. I know its early 1800's, possibly late 1700's. The glazing used for the design is a reddish brown. Im not sure what the design is. I know that with the early utilitarian pots they were simply decorated if any at all. It almost looks like a bird, or maybe a type of flower? Im thinking if I can figure that symbol out on the jug and can discover the origin. anybody know anything about it or know someone who would?

You are correct on age and use. As far as the symbol many times they were simply decorative designs. Often on pieces the outline of the decoration was incised with a pointed tool and filled in with a blue or like you have a mocha or orchre color. They often come up at stoneware auctions and if you search " incised stoneware " on eBay sooner or later you'll find them. Value ...like anything condition and rarity of the design . Yours is a commonly seen decoration . In any case nice save.
