went out after work to a place i had hunted numerous time because it is half a block fom my house.....last week they bulldozed the houses on the site so i have been hunting there as much as possible......well i got out of the car and just wandered around sorta dodging muddy areas....found a 1962 nickle........then got a pretty good signal dug it and out came the belt plate....i dont know anything about it so any info would be great.....it was all i could do to keep hunting, wanted to fly home and post it....glad i stayed about 20 minutes later the 1939 merc popped out....literally.... stuck digger in popped out a chunk of dirt and the dime started rolling across the ground lol
ok i'll hush now and let ya see the pics

From what I have seen in the past on this site, (remember I'm A Brit), I think you have a pretty good find there. Someone will ID shortly.

Well done ;D

Cool belt plate! Here's a link to one (of many) places where you can see how much those can be worth. The backs of the ones on the site all seem a little different from yours in one way or another, but I sure hope its original... even damaged its a great find!

I don't know if I'd shine it up. Civil War relics are the same as Coins. The more you clean, the less in value it is. :'( :'( :'(

OMG Marty, that's a remarkable find :o Why is it when we are really looking for something and can't find nothing, then when we are just "cherry picking" we find something incredible? Congrats, Marty...the dime is nice too. ;D

I agree with all those about the ID of your find. I got a CW one last January. I will also echo the comment about not cleaning your find.

Congrats!!!

Re: oldest silver and a BELT PLATE!!!!!!!!

That is a truly enviable find. Congratulations!

I would clean the loose soil off it but leave it alone, beyond that. Don't try to "shine it up" too much- leave it as an "original" relic.
