An interesting old iron

Well today wasn't a total bust,I dug an old iron, definately not an electric one it is solid iron. it was nearly 8 inches deep and it's heavy as anything. It was found in the area that I've been finding late 18th and early 19th century items,a spot I call my honey hole.I don't really know anything about early irons,if anyone has any info it would be much appreciated. Thanks

It's called a flat iron, obviously missing the handle. You'd need at least two irons on the go together for an effective system: one in use, and one re-heating. Large households with servants had a special ironing-stove for this purpose. Some stoves were fitted with slots for several irons, and a water-jug on top. We use them as doorstops.
