Last year I lost my favored Buck knife, and with the snow about gone here I thought I would get my first outing to that spot and look for it.

I was digging all signals over 40 on the AT, and a mid fifties at 8" got me going. Unfortunately this spot has not gotten sun yet, so at 6" I hit frozen ground. My method for this is to use my sharpened screw driver as a chisel, and bang on it with my shovel. At 3/8" wide I do not get much with each chunk, but finally the signal was out of the hole. Looking around I saw the unmistakable round edge of a silver coin - great!

Then I saw it - not so great.

Oops - a half inch over and I would have had a nice coin.

Oh well, a Liberty on my first outing ain't all bad.

I don't know, it sort of looks like an old gash. Regardless, Mercs are beautiful coins.

That looks like an old hit to me. I've nicked a few and so has everyone that I know that has hunted for any length of time. Hazard of the hobby. Nice find.

Just think how you would have felt if it was a 1916D.. At least you got out and found something and if you're going to nick one it's always good if it can be one that's really only worth it's weight in Silver. Looks like a good day to me.

It thought it was a dog and retrieved a stick?

Nice going on the silver from the frozen tundra.
