I purchased this coin a very long time ago. I put it in plastic holder and never really looked at it. But what do you guys think? Am I tripping?? Ive asked a couple of people and im getting that the four is for sure doubled. But i did ask non numismatic individuals. Any input is appreciated
IMO, it is not. What you are seeing is a slight die crack from the 2 due to die deterioration. Also, with the combined magnification and wishful thinking, it is easy to believe you have something when it does not exist. You should not have to magnify a true 42/1 mercury dime. It can be seen with the naked eye. To see a true specimen that was found in the wild, check out Treeslayer's find from a couple years ago. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/c...are-42-over-41-merc-i-found-per-requests.html
Don't feel dumb!! We all had to start somewhere! And even guys that have done it for years still miss stuff or label it wrong. Heck, I've been around it off and on for years and will still never remember or know everything or even how to grade accurately. There is so much to learn !
I may have a bad memory but I do kind of remember seeing something where the 1 was barely visible. But they aren't "true" 2 over 1 and aren't worth as much. I might be mixed up on that too... I was trying to research it years ago. I have one that If I could get to it easily. I'd take a pic of. You barely see it at the bottom and at the top. It's real light. But I never had it checked by an expert to see what it actually is. It may be nothing too.
There are two different 42/1 Mercs. One has no mintmark and the other is the 'D'. They look a bit different and the 42/1 D is much harder to spot with the naked eye. Still, the coin in question is neither.
