I use to pan gold in you middle photo off that far right point by the end of the hwy there. It was the tailrace area for the end of the hanging flume.

Zoom in on that bench below on the other side of the river. You'll see someone has been working that alluvial deposit by the river at the end of that road and a spiral wheel just to the right of those workings.

Oh yea its in the high bench placer gravel's use to pan all the way to Gateway back in the day should have filed some claims back then no one was even there now its all claimed up. Big clubs will come in there with 40 members on a 3 day weekend and move some gravel and clean up. They will have a highbanker set up and guys on lawn tractor hauling with wagons to dump buckets to it. You will see it starting in spring if you drive down that way quite an operation.

Indeed a lot of Colorado has been claimed and over run. We have a warehouse in Nucla Colorado and the fastest way there is I70 to GJ and 50 to 141, so I'll be going through Gateway from time to time I'm sure. The road was a bit slick from Whitewater to Gateway.

Pulled a few flatbed loads out of that area back in the mid-90's.
Absolutely gorgeous country.

Grant, I'm curious...what is that in the first pic ..it's just to
the left of your front left fender?

Thats the reflection of a strap on a mask I have up on the dash. You know mask orders are everywhere I go, except for those who aren't in the know.
