🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Oval shaped item

[Appalachian Woodsman]

This piece was found partially intact, 4" down on a 1700s property in Maryland where Union made an encampment on the way to Gettysburg.

Small flecks of gold plating still visible. Otherwise, a greenish brown patina. A recess around the interior suggests to me a locket or pocket watch but the armature that covers it is tripping me up.

I've got others employed on the search but this site is ALWAYS quick with accurate answers or viable suggestions. I honor you people highly. You yourselves are a National Treasure.

It reminds me of something like this microscope mirror.

It is the remains of a "spinner" watch fob. I'm guessing turn of the 19th C give or take a couple decades.

It looks like piece of a pair of antique spectacles. The wire piece being the bridge for the nose. It apears to have had the same eyelet on the end that is broken off, if you look closely you can kind of see it. Also explains the recessed grooved area for a lens and the small protusion on the opposite side for the temple arm. That's my 2 cents. 🙂
