It was a punishing 25 degrees out today with two inches of snow on the ground. Went back to the spot where I found my Rev War era stirrup. Spent almost two hours searching the general area and had ONE good signal, which rang up in the low 70's. I pulled out a colonial shoe buckle frame about 5 inches down. No tongue or chape, but at least the buckle's in nice shape.

The buckle has a thin frame and measures 1 1/2" by 2 3/8". Plain looking buckle, but still a great find in the middle of winter!

Nice. I’m well south of you and frozen solid. I’m glad you got to dig a nice keeper.

Digging here is hit or miss. Some spots are only frozen an inch, while others are 3 or 4 inches. Only doing woods hunts right now. I imagine that all open fields are hard as a rock.

Very nice. I went 150 miles south of here with another TNetter and hit a Civil War camp. Got a few things, but most importantly the ground was not frozen. I LOVE your buckle.

Points for you for getting out there today. Pretty brutal conditions... but that shoe buckle frame is a very nice reward. Well done!

I beat the heck out of my Lesche Sampson shovel digging that one out! It held up great, though. Definitely one tough shovel!

Thanks! The worst part was the trail leading to the area was glare ice and I took a couple of headers along the way. So glad there wasn't anyone else around to witness them!

Here's a couple of pics of the buckle cleaned up with a light coat of Renaissance Wax applied. Not bad at all!

I do believe it's brass. Most of the colonial buckles I find have a greenish patina and are probably bronze. This one has more of a light brown color, so I'm going with brass.
