I know this is a gold plated, sword scabbard top piece, but so far I have not been able to date it or associate it with a particular group or culture. I found it at a house that was the first one built in a town around 1870. This home was well known in the area and had large social gatherings, huge weddings, etc, and still covers one square block of property.

All help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim (BFO)

"Pax Aut Bellum" (Latin, meaning "Either Peace Or War") is the motto on swords of the Patriarchs Militant (Uniformed Ranks of the International Order Of Oddfellows), a fraternal organization very similar to the Masons.

Your sword-scabbard part is actually not the scabbard's throat, but a scabbard hanger-band. The exact match for the one you dug is in the photo here (along with info):
Patriarchs Militant IOOF Sword Identification
