metal-mole, it is very unique, that cities (or county, or state, etc...) has such a thing. Very few, in any given state, do such a thing. If you fear that your locale might have such a thing, find out on your own (verses going in and asking a deskbound bureaucrat if there is such a thing where you are). The reason is, that such a question might be deemed as if you were asking permission (ie.: "can I metal detect?"). And the trouble with that is, someone can just say "no", even if no such rule exists (because perhaps they envision geeks with shovels, and "no" is the easy answer). And this can happen in an area where no one would ever have cared or noticed (till you asked).

If there is a permit system, then it would seem to me that you could find out by going to the city's website (or county, or state, or whatever) where usually muni codes and rules are easily accessible public info, right? Just do a key-word search under "permits" or "metal detecting", etc... if it is silent on the issue, well, then ...... there must not be a permit, nor any prohibitions, right? :tongue3:

And if your city doesn't have a website, and you don't think the wooden sign at the park entrance is complete enough, then public codes, laws, rules, etc.... are usually available in printed form, on the front desk at city hall (because the info. has to be publically accessible, in some form). Browse through it. If there's nothing there, then consider yourself as if you were a person intending to fly a frisbee. If no permits are mentioned, and nothing prohibits it, then so be it.
