Hi,
I have just moved to Valley Cottage NY from the UK and have no idea if I need a local permit to go metal detect in the local area. I am assuming I will need some sort of permit but have yet to find out. I would be most grateful if someone could point me in the right direction on this one, thank you.

National parks, national historic sites, and state historic sites are just about always off limits. If you plan on detecting a park check to see if it is a township, city, or county (etc.) park and see what their rules are. For parks you sometimes need a permit but it just depends on the park system. I can't think of a circumstance where you would need a permit for private land here in the USA. Happy hunting!

Lots of places to detect in Rockland County NY . The historic places are off limits. Just use good common sense and you be fine. best of luck to you
