It might not be very old or made of gold like some of my other finds but it has a special place in my heart. The Cannon pictured are a fairly common UK find. But a complete Petronel, Fishtailed musket from circa 1640s is a great find in anyones books. They are highly collectable & this one is worth over £100 (not that I'm selling).

They were filled with black powder & fired for fun!

When ever I do displays, people comment on this item even though they see the gold coins. Shows it captures the imagination of those that have little interest in metal detecting & history.

Okay, maybe they're not quite up there with Celtic staters, but I think those may be my favorites of all the (fantastic!) stuff you've posted. Gotta love 'em!

Fortunately black powder is plentiful and easy to get here in the USA. I shoot it in my old muzzle loader rifles for deer hunting. I would be tempted to build a little miniature wheeled carriage if I had one and fire it to celebrate holidays. There are a lot of the carbide cannons still around too. But I find such things very interesting, more so than coins even. Monty

The cannon may be common over there but those are both very cool finds. 8) Congrats.

Those are Wonderful! Kids should still play with things like these--there's no choking hazard. ;D

I understand the joke, but just to add to the debate. It was unlikely that kids had the chance to play with them. They were more a Geltlemens table piece. Something they would play with after lunch to impress their friends. Maybe the odd kid had them in a wealthy family but not that many.

Now THAT I never knew! Next time I have a dinner party I am going to whip out my matchbox sized Yacht. ;D Maybe I can fill it with gunpowder so it will be impressive as well. 8)

Yes that was a great find, a very nice Petronel. I agree with you also about the cannon, but this one is pretty neat.

They are a special find. I was just lucky to get 1 which was near perfect. Never had another since.
