This might be piggybacking off of AbTexEx's post.

I'm going to a rave in Peoria, AZ. I've been wanting to go to Phoenix for years, mostly for shopping and restaurants.

Being in this hobby and having read Kenworthy, I'm aware of the Superstition mountains. Does this mean a trip to Lost Dutchman State Park? Does anyone have any travel/photography tips for me? Aren't there treasure hunting museums here? Can you actually follow Kensworthy's instructions and find the mines he writes about at the end of the book?

I would like to have seen the treasurehunting crews in the 70s, shooting at each other.

Enjoy the 100+ degree heat and rattlesnakes! Next time, try and schedule your raves in the winter - Good luck!

Terry, Why do you think I never made it there before? I've been wanting to go X-mas/New Year. LOL

I've done Vegas in the Summer. 113 degrees. I went to a cheesesteak shack where they were cooking with a fan in the window. A little girl with her dad said, "Good thing it's not too hot today."

Since you are going to be in the valley you might as well get a few good pictures to share with us.

Personally I would recommend photo shoots during the summer due to sun angle.
Whoever said to view these signs between the hours of 11am and 1pm obviously has never spent a summer here.

Winter visitors, gotta luv um

Coming from Peoria (just guessing) let's see...

If you drop off the 101 in Scotsdale onto Shea Blvd head East
When you start into Fountain Hills JUST past the Frys entrances is the entrance to View attachment Fish Point.kml overlook.
Slow down or you will miss it. No signs just looks like a driveway. Be mindful of the traffic.
Excellent view of the valley from here and...

Red Mountain

Fair warning

Do "NOT" be tempted to drive any of the roads around or up to this mountain.
If the SRPMIC police don't arrest you and confiscate your vehicle,
the DHS will
I have been in there numerous times and it's by invitation only.
Trust me you ain't missin a thang.

Keep going east till you get to the Beeline Hwy SR 87 then go south.
When you get to View attachment JR's.kml convenience store, park on the north side, get your spyglass out and take a good look.
Especially the smaller hills around the mountain.
You are on the Salt River which in the old days would have been considered a highway through there.
One of the members of this forum is adamant about the LDM being on this mountain.
When you see the trail marker that is visible only in the SUMMER you will understand why it is NOT on this mountain.

Rules is Rules

South some more to the 202 Red Mountain Hwy head east will get you to Apache Junction.
Late evening and it's gotta be hotter than, well you know. Park View attachment here.kml and take a look at the Superstition Mountains.
Huge trail marker on the west face way up. I love to point to it and wait for the "HOLY #&@% I never noticed that before!"

Once you get to this point you have driven past hundreds of signs and trail markers (not to mention shopping centers, restaurants and casinos)
And at least 2 dozen hills that have been altered into a specific shape that are along a track that...
Never mind. Talk about that later.

When we hike the Superstitions in the summer we start first light on the West side in the shade for the hike up.
Easier hike back down once the heat starts kickin in.
Lost Dutchman State Park has good parking, maps, water, fairly easy trails and lots of people even in the summer.
Plenty to look at and take pictures of.

Can you actually follow Kensworthy's instructions and find the mines he writes about at the end of the book?

Emphatically

Yep

Here, Mexico, South America, Spain, et cetera.

AbTexEx,

Thanks for all the info. Stuff came up, so I won't be going this weekend. I'll wait until it's a little cooler and follow your instructions.

I should've gone to Phoenix, but I stayed in NM to attend a former student's graduation party, and we have a trip coming up. So I decided to go to a rave here.

I drove 20 miles into Indian Country, ended up off the road. My wife's screaming with blind in Texas chainsaw flashbacks. We ended up on quad terrain with no parking, and I turned around and left. I was going to park on the side of the road and go in, but there was no side of the road. Now it's raining, and everybody there is probably gonna be trapped in mud.
