Despite his limited success during the Golden Age, John Rackham, Pirate Captain is prominently remembered and has been featured in beloved games and movies like Assassin's Creed.

John Rackham - History’s Worst Pirate?

The tale of John Rackham, often known as Calico Jack, paints a vivid picture of a less celebrated pirate from the Golden Age. Rackham's exploits, while not impressive by pirate standards, have left a lasting mark on pirate lore. His two-month captaincy involved capturing mostly inconspicuous vessels, debunking the glamorous image created by an embellished 1724 publication. The legend of Rackham is entangled with the questionable narratives of "A General History of the Pirates," a book rife with exaggerations and pop-historical sensationalism. Rackham's notoriety, despite his lackluster career, sheds light on the harsh realities faced by many pirates during that era.

The discrepancies in his backstory, chronicled in conflicting volumes of the General History, highlight the speculative and fictional nature of pirate legends. It is intriguing to note how historians selectively cherry-pick details from these conflicting accounts, perpetuating a distorted image of Rackham. In truth, the documented facts about Rackham are scant. His encounter with pirate hunters, the alleged romance with Anne Bonny, and the buried treasure saga lack substantiation. The varied spellings of his name in historical records add a touch of whimsy to his enigmatic persona. John Rackham, the unremarkable pirate, serves as a reminder that pirate history is often a blend of fact and fiction, challenging us to discern the authentic from the embellished.

We will probably never really know for sure their exact lives only whats was said about them from 3rd party sources at the time. There is a huge fascination with pirates from 17th century golden age of piracy.

Yet For me the fascination is of pirates are 18th century later mini golden age of piracy from about 1806 to about 1840. In a time of great world turmoil in the power vacuum as the Spanish empire collapsed. Napoleonic war and the war of 1812.

Hollywood nearly always portrays the flamboyant 17 century pirates. Not the later rather later more squalid and murderous 18th century pirates that started out as privateers straying into piracy when the expected returns from privateering was poor.
