Might try the Texas sub-forum. But if you're new to the hobby, try out the parks and schools to get a feel for it. Then, start researching those older properties for permission.

reading local history and looking at old maps and aerial photos are the traits of a successful MDer. Metal detecting is like fishing, no one is going to tell you where their honey holes are. When I started and wanted to lean my machine I hit every public park and school withing 40 miles of my house and soon upgraded from an el cheapo detector to a mid level Fisher. I then went back and hunted all those sites again. Metal detecting has been huge in my area on and off over the decades dating back to the 1970's. Most of the good finds on those public sites were cherry picked over the decades. I find most of my great finds on private permission yards in town, in the older parts of town where the house was built in the mid to late 1800's. GL & HH
