Pocket Watch from late 1800s with etchings

Yesterday, while back at the late 1800s teardown's backyard to further investigate the trash pit that produced several 1890s bottles, I found a second pocket watch. This open faced watch looked like it could be silver, but on cleaning doesn't act that way. Looking at the pictures I took out in the field, I could see some etchings in the center that appear to be NyPE. After cleaning, I also noticed some scratched out letters: Noward? I don't see any stamped markings on the watch and it doesn't open. Also found the Warner's Safe Cure for Kidney and Liver, from Rochester, NY.
Was about 60 degrees in Denver yesterday, great for a hunt, today 25 and snowing. Cindy

cool. pocket watches are really fun to find. I usually just find pieces of them. I think I've only found a couple intact. the warners safe bottle is cool too. I've always liked the graphics on them

Better pictures of the etchings. Meward? Also husband said try penetrating oil. Opened case, reads: Patent Lever / First / Jewelled/ Stem Winder / No 62443. Looks like stainless steel.

I grew up in Rochester NY that bottle traveled quite a way to Colorado. Great Finds. Wish I had your weather. Ground is frozen and snow covered here.

I believe that scratched word is "Howard".

Cool find. Design is engraved, not etched, looks like a nickel or German silver (which has no silver in it) watch. Stainless steel wasn't invented until 1917 and not used a lot until the 1920s.

Thanks for the info on the metal. Since it's not marked and didn't clean like silver. Also I was trying to show the scratched name/words to see if anyone had ideas especially on the center of the piece that looks like a crude NyPE. That's some fancy engraving on that watch. It was fun to pull that one out of the dirt. Cindy

Surf, Thanks for the Warner's site; very cool. Dug at that site as much as possible over the last week, fitting that to time off and weather. The site yielded a couple dozen slicks, 3 more Warner's, various food bottles, a couple plain booze bots, Hood's Sarsaparilla, Kilmers' kidney and liver as well as Mrs Winslow's soothing syrup, infant food, doll parts, china pieces and Mason jars. Also 6 Frank Miller's shoe dressings. I also posted a donkey scene platter on this site's bottle section. Another cool find was a spoon commemorating Rear Admiral Sampson 1898-99 with his flagship New York which was sailed during the Spanish American War. So big cold front dropped 4 inches of snow here and it's 10 degrees. The construction at the site was held up by the city, but will be restarting. Cindy

Ok now your just being mean !!! We have 8" on top of frozzzzzen ground ,no hunting at all !! Yet ,,, I'm glad someone is finding sumpting !! Congrats on the Warners & the watch !! I've found many watches,but not one with that much writing,Dug one a few years back with just about the same engraving . Keep it up !
