Pocket watch rim

Dug this on Saturday just a few feet away from an old button identified as being from the mid 1800's. I wonder why there are holes every now and then in this though? Any thoughts? I'm guessing this is silver plated. It came out pretty clean.

That looks like the center section of a pocket watch!

I've seen that style before and can't remember if it was a "dollar watch" or something else like a timer. The slot at the top is where one of the winding gears was. The raised pads are where the dial screwed to(metal dial held on with screws), and the other holes are where screws went to hold the movement. That's why there are so many holes.
