Here's an idea. Next time you go out detecting carry a very old, dirty corroded low value coin in your pocket. Let the cop "find" that one and he'll think he found a treasure. He'll be your best friend after that!

While at the local lake, there was an altercation that required 4 officers to break up.
I was detecting the area after the hooligans were removed from the property. I have a 9.5" long home made digger. Looks like a Bowie knife meets garden spade. Anyway, all 4 of the cops just stood there staring at my digger. I keep it in a home made leather sheath when not in use, but you should have seen their eyes when I got a hit and pulled that puppy out. I thought they were going to draw on me. They watched me pull some pulltabs and trash that I pocketed, sheathed my rambo digger and went to the next target.
They said "hey" and that was all. They left without any questions at all.
After they were gone, I found a few bucks from the scuffle.
Not all cops are a-holes.

Former police, 25 years, and when I saw the title I thought, 'Oh no, here it comes again!' Glad you ran into the 99% of us who are able to prioritize and differentiate a crime from a harmless recreational activity. Good post, I liked it. Course that 1% does get around and are way more flamboyant, so they usually get your attention.
I agree, RGINN. I was a Milwaukee badge for almost 20 years. Cops have ENOUGH to do today than to chase down these kind of calls. I'll tell you what happened to me. I posted this before: When I was a newbie, I was hunting the Jamestown National Park. I didn't know! MAN was I doing good.Lots of cash. Someone on the beach must have called because a ranger met me in the parking lot. My detector was in my hand. He had me COLD. He asked if I found anything. I said Yea. I pulled out a bunch of stuff from my pocket... a bottle cap, broken glass, tin foil, sharp can, AND a great big gold earing in the middle. He just told me, "Get outta here". Too HOT lately for cops to chase a DETECTORIST over fences! TTC

It pays to be friendly with the POPO...You gotta see things from their side...They deal with nimrods all day long...It is good to have someone show them respect and cooperate...Believe me...They appreciate it.

All my experiences with LEO's have been good. Most of them are actually helpful. Had several of them give me hints on possibly good sites. One of em suggested I hit an old property, I stated I didnt have permission, he said if anyone called that he would just come out and tell me to pack it up. LOL.

Years ago, when I was looking for that Confederate treasure buried in pots along the RR tracks, I stopped and ask a trooper for directions to the RR. He ask me what I was looking for. I told him. He gave me the directions and told me his brother was into the hobby. He gave me his card and said to let him know if the pots were really there so he could tell his brother.. His card on my dash saved me a radar ticket.
