You've likely heard of the Common Core Math standards: 2 + 2 = 5 if you really believe it does. You can't be wrong.

Now we find that the premier book for 11th graders under this curriculum is "The Bluest Eye" - which (among other things) contains descriptions of adults having sex with children as though it is normal.

This facebook page contains a few excerpts from the book.

Common Core Has Approved Child Pornography ...Absolutely Disgusting

(WARNING!!! The excerpts from the book "The Bluest Eye" are GRAPHIC. Enough so that it is too embarassing for me to continue reading ... and I used to be an Over The Road Truck Driver)

Then there's the take of ThinkProgress: The Most Disturbing Argument In The Attempt To Ban 'The Bluest Eye' From Alabama High Schools | ThinkProgress

More filth called education. Teaching children to enjoy pornography is not my idea of creating a great society ... unless you're a child molester like the star of the book appears to be.

Coming to a school near you ... on Obama's watch.

clearly some people have issues beyond the stated title of the thread...

SparkNotes: The Bluest Eye: Context

In the afterword to The Bluest Eye, Morrison explains her goal in writing the novel. She wants to make a statement about the damage that internalized racism can do to the most vulnerable member of a community—a young girl. At the same time, she does not want to dehumanize the people who wound this girl, because that would simply repeat their mistake. Also, she wants to protect this girl from “the weight of the novel’s inquiry,” and thus decides to tell the story from multiple perspectives. In this way, as she puts it, she “shape a silence while breaking it,” keeping the girl’s dignity intact.

perhaps the concept is lost to some who wish examination of hidden topics to be porno.

The narrator comments that Mrs. Breedlove and Cholly need each other—she needs him to reinforce her identity as a martyr and to give shape to an otherwise dreary life, and he needs to take out a lifetime of hurt upon her. When Cholly was young, two white men once caught having sex with a girl. They forced him to continue while they watched. Instead of hating the white men, Cholly hated the girl. Because of this and other humiliations, Cholly is a violent and cruel man. The fights between him and Mrs. Breedlove follow a predictable pattern, and the two have an unstated agreement not to kill each other. Sammy usually either runs away from home or joins the fight. Pecola tries to find ways to endure the pain.

This isn't about anyone's "intentions" as we all are old enough to know "the road to hell is paved with good intentions."

What I read is enough to see that is a very ill person who wrote it.

Ascribing any human traits to a pedophile to try to minimize their crimes against children.

Take them into the swamp, tie them to a stump, and let the other alpha predators provide justice.

WTH are you blubbering about now PIp? Did you read that it was for 11th grade. Isn't that like, High School? I thought you said anyone at 17 was a child. Some of these kids aren't that age yet.

Do you think subjecting these "students" to this crap will open their eyes, or further degrade their morality? Sad you are defending this,, if it was a university at least most of them are 18. (not adults till 26 though, New government standards).

Sad. Very.

I told people about this over a decade ago, I knew it was coming - and let me tell you; you aint seen nothing yet. The promotion of perversion is an all out war on morality. People like PWP are pushing this horrible crap, pure left politics. I get WAY too pissed to talk about this - it really makes me want to hurt people........I HATE Evil and that is exactly what this is. Like you said Dave - Sad, so very sad.

Read the article Ben. This is not something that these students should be subjected to.

Hmmmm,Ban such great books as The adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the Red Badge of Courage,Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,Mody Dick, but let the kids read porn, interesting.Sad,but interesting. It must go along with the gay pride day once a week.:dontknow:

Adults having sex with children is evil in my world. Pushing books about adults having sex with children is crap.

What is your opinion about child rape so we can see who is backwards here?

Children are not mature enough to consent to sex with adults. Therefore, it is considered RAPE.

I actually did read the article. Then I looked up info about the actual book.

That article, and many others like it, are being pushed by the extreme religious right and are probably some of the most biased sources I have ever seen used on this site.

The use of the term pornographic to describe this book is beyond ridiculous. Please, go ahead and post a graphic excerpt from this book in an attempt to prove me wrong. If you do, I will tell you that you could use a lesson in literature and reading comprehension.

If you take a graphic excerpt and analyze it alone, in a bubble, outside the context of reading comprehension skills exercises, then you have missed the point entirely. At that point, you might as well just ignore your lessons in school because you will not benefit from the intended lesson in any way. At that point, I would probably question why you arent in a remedial reading class, as a book like this would be way over your head.

If we become so focused on the content alone (and I am talking about individual words being analyzed), even a small piece of content from an otherwise well written book, then we are doing the entire country a disservice.

Please, lets allow anyone and everyone full access to guns - any kind and as many guns as they want. Lets relax ALL regulations by the federal government. We should be allowed to do whatever we want right? Isnt that what we all want?

But first, lets just ban ONE MORE book. Its just a bunch of pornography, right?

MODS: If you need to remove or edit this post, I understand.

How about page 162 ...

“A bolt of desire ran down his genitals…and softening the lips of his anus. . . . He wanted to f*** her—tenderly. But the tenderness would not hold. The tightness of her vagina was more than he could bear. His soul seemed to slip down his guts and fly out into her, and the gigantic thrust he made into her then provoked the only sound she made. Removing himself from her was so painful to him he cut it short and snatched his genitals out of the dry harbor of her vagina. She appeared to have fainted.”

How about page 174, trying to justify his pedophilia:

He further limited his interests to little girls. They were usually manageable . . . His sexuality was anything but lewd; his patronage of little girls smacked of innocence and was associated in his mind with cleanliness.” And later, this same pedophile notes, “I work only through the Lord. He sometimes uses me to help people.

Maybe pages 84 & 85:

He must enter her surreptitiously, lifting the hem of her nightgown only to her navel. He must rest his weight on his elbows when they make love, to avoid hurting her breasts…When she senses some spasm about to grip him, she will make rapid movements with her hips, press her fingernails into his back, suck in her breath, and pretend she is having an orgasm. She might wonder again, for the six hundredth time, what it would be like to have that feeling while her husband’s ***** is inside her.

Sounds like anything you want minor children reading?

If that's alright with you, then by all means, pass out the Glocks at the start of the school day.

Dave, I could just as easily accuse all of you guys of not being able to see the forest for the trees and it would be just as relevant.

Funny Ben,, But while you are analyzing the dna strands of each piece of grass you forget that it is a single blade in the field. You lost site of the problem. The field needs cut.

My whole point was basically your same point in post #13 (and restated in #15) only directed at you guys (as I already said in post #14).

Considering I made the point first, you are just redirecting it at me and playing the "no you are" game. I have no interest in getting stuck in a loop. May we move on, please?

This being the thread it is, is populated by people who agree that Banning books is a good thing. Do a cross section of subsets between pro gun and religious right and you will find a lot of the same people belong to both groups. More disturbing than banning it from schools is the drive to ban it from libraries.

The author,Toni Morrison, is a Pulitzer prize winner as well as a Noble Prize winner. So she does not suffer from some illness. What she did suffer from was growing up black and poor in an ohio suburb. And, that is what the book is about. ( not ohio) it is about teaching those high school students to think critically and pen a dialog between students and the communtiy in which they live (maybe that's what people are afraid of?)

One school board president, Debe Terhar, did her best to get the book banned. Apparently Mz Terhar has a history of getting books surrounding black issues banned. She is also on record as frying Obama over gun control. So, definately Xright. That might work if she were school board president in some one stop light town, but she's president of the City of Cleveland's School Board. But, probably, after this, not for much longer.

amazing how many insults came out of the woodwork for a rational post from me...

pushing porno am I? and no moderation to the direct insults...typical.

I am also appalled by many of the comments by posters here regarding this topic.

Not only does this logic conflict directly with the whole "freedom" and "dont ban my guns" attitude that many have, but it exemplifies a complete lack of understanding and respect for legitimate educational methods.
