Was detecting at the inlaws today with my daughter. We found a bunch of clad coins, a wheat, a 1919 dog tag that didn't impress her too much("Sheesh it's only a dog tag Dad!"), and then we found an old military button that from looking online I believe to be a civil war Infantry officers button. Which would be our oldest and coolest find so far!

Does appear to be civil war and wow what nice condition. Pic of back would really push this in the right direction for identification. Dog tags that old are cool!

Need a picture of the back. The backmark is very helpful for IDing a button's age.

Some of those old dog tags are worth quite a bit. There are collectors out there who pay big bucks for early tags !

yes, it is 100% a Civil War, or slightly earlier button. It is in spectacular condition and it is exceedingly rare to dig one in that condition. Congratulations. Good luck finding more.

Hi Karslin; Yes it is a Civil War Button. It is a 2 Piece Infantry Button hence it is marked with n "I" on its chest shield. A = Artillery etc. Value in that condition is about $60 Boston prices ok. Sweet find in GREAT condition. Keep it up. PEACE:RONB

Cool, thanks for the confirmation guys, it's good to know it is actually Civil War era. I doubt if I'll find many more of those since northwest ohio isn't exactly know for civil war battles. Since it's up here I'm hoping it came back on a survivor.

Actually, being Ohio had a high percentage of it's men who fought in the Civil War, it is highly possible you will find more as the poorer returning veteran's would wear their uniforms until they fell apart.............
