Possible civil war item

found this at a civil war site. Dunno what it is. Maybe something to do with a sword hanger..... a suspender?....or fell off my 4-wheeler. Inquiring minds want to know

It's part of a Union regular issue belt buckle. It would sit in the brass and the lead was cast over it to finish the buckle.. Pull up a pic on the net somewhere. The two round attachments and the hook would face in the same direction, and it would lie flat.
