Hit the amboy area over the holiday, found some old coins etc. there is an area buy the tracks that dates back to the 1860s, this was about 10in down. has green patina but looks like its been melted in chunks together. looks like copper, i filed a spot on it, maybe mixed with other metals, weighs 2 1/2 pounds, very heavy for its size. will have it tested. I need to be enlightened also. I thought those were always in precious metals.

Well way back in the old west and then some, if gold coins, nuggets, etc was stolin, they were very crud in melting the gold down into slopy clumps sometimes mixing with other metals, trying to make a lumpy bumpy gold bar nick name dory bar...excuse my spelling.

Okay, so it's not a candy bar. Ya'll were making me hungry here. Knowing now what a dory bar is I hope yours has big chunks of gold throughout.

Its spelled DORE. It is pronounced Door-E.

When you are far from home working a mine (like the Spanish in the 1600s), it is impractical to drag tons of ore from the Mohave Desert back to the mint in Mexico City. So what the miners do is crush the ore (in an arrastra), mix in some mercury to leach all the precious metals out of the rock. Then you either cook off the mercury (dangerous), or use a retort to recover the mercury. This leaves you with a big chunk of amalgamated gold. Melt that in a smelter, and pour it into a mold. You get all the metals that were in the ore. Dore Bars typically run about 65% gold, 15% silver, and the rest lead, platinum, etc. There are two types of bars:

Dore Bars= Unrefined rough castings (lowest purity)

Refined Bars= Smelted and refined bars (highest purity)

The reason for making dore bars is so that you only have the metal to transport. Takes up a lot less space than raw ore.

It is a cool find, but that would probably be classified as slag rather than a dore bar. Dore bars are cast in a mold, that looks like something that was skimmed or left over from the process.

Probably iron slag from a smelter.

Could always be a meteorite!
