Just got back from three weeks at sea and needed a detecting fix real bad. Played hooky from work and went to an 1850s adobe site I found earlier this year. The site is wicked overgrown, full of briars, bees, and snakes, and during this visit, I decided to do a little weed wacking before I picked up my detector. The ground is like brick (adobe brick!) and I think I'm going to wait until the winter rains soften things up. This is the first real 'keeper' from the site.

I've found other "P.O.D" buttons on the web, but none showing a horse rider with a mail bag. If anyone out there has run across a similar button type, give me a holler, would love to know more. Thanks for looking. - Jim happydance.gif

Nice button, cleaned up great. Not sure about the early dates you say, according to Tice, the lettering size of HORSTMANN and the double inner ring is listed as 1880-1893, if it matters at all.

Also, not 100% sure but don't think the first uniform was required until 1868 and the POD was not required on the buttons until 1873.

Maybe someone else will have additional information.
