This one shown was found by my son. We were walking a dried up creekbed and he was about 10 feet behind me. He said "Here's a piece of flint" and before I got turned around good, he tosses it to me. With it being shady and me being 'bout half blind, I missed of course, and it tinked off the gravel. Fortunately, it didn't do any damage. I picked it up and told him that if he's gonna find the best piece of the day to just hand it to me next time. I don't know what I'm gonna do with that young'un sometimes...

Those are very nice scrapers and lithic material. Find quite a few unifacial points. This one was convenient to grab and photograph. New England argillite(argillaceous slate; NJ argillite is argillaceous shale). Late Archaic point from the Brewerton series....

Real nice materials, workmanship and forms on all those blades Sandchip! I think I enjoy finding a nice uniface blade as much as a nice point, and certainly more than just an average point. That dark one is reallly, cool, such a long flake it was made from.
That is an interesting unifacial point Charl, down my way they are few and far between. We find some deteriorated argillite points and tools here, but I don't know to how tell if they are the slate or shale varieties? I assume they are probably NJ shale, as that is closer to us, and they do not seem to hold up as well over time as the slate piece you posted.

Here are three of my favorites from the site here on our home farm. The dark one with the large platform still evident was found the first time I walked this site about 10 years ago. The next two were found last spring, which is the last time the dirt was turned here. None of them are totally unifacial, but close enough I guess. The last one that looks sort of light greyish might be my favorite, only because it was apparently picked up and re-purposed by a considerably later group of people. Not sure how well it will show up in the photos, but one end has been re-sharpened long after original manufacture, and shows the inner almost black material, rather than the ancient greyed patina. HH

Here's our best! Petrified wood side knife. Also an inherited disc scraper. And some on here don't believe the last one is a scraper, but I am holding firm. It could be a hoe at 9" long though.

I think you can tell the difference by the grain size. Once in awhile, argillite from south of us, NJ and Pa I guess, shows up here. It's a lot grainier then argillite from Ma. And RI. Basically, if the texture is grainy, it's argillaceous shale, if smooth and not grainy, and patinated greenish or bluish green, it's argillaceous slate. In fact, it looks and patinates a lot like slate from the Carolina slate belt, and may even be a similar rock type. Over the years, a lot of confusion would arise whenever I posted "argillite" points to forums. Folks from south of New England would always correct me with "that's slate, not argillite". Finally, a friend who knew the answer explained it to me. Now, whenever I mention or show argillite points from RI, I always also specify it's really argillaceous slate.

A friend told me this base was argillite from the Mid coast south of us. It's a lot grainier then my unifacial point. Our argillite is also a poor lithic, definitely a "just get by" grade of material I think.......

Very nice pieces! Here is a jasper scraper and a quartzite point that's not quite unifacial, with a little edge work, but close....

Nice tools there Viking ! I really like the reddish one on top with the lighter colors in it. That material reminds me of some I see over my way sometimes, and it seems to only show up on early archaic pieces best I can tell, gets me psyched when it turns up. HH

Nice artifacts folks! Here are a few Jasper uniface tools from our property in VA.
Recently, a fella told me if I find any jasper with bluish spots or veins in it, it was from one particular quarry in VA. Do you have any jasper with bluish spots in it? I've found one core. Supposedly only one quarry produces that coloration. Nice jasper you have!!
