Question for all you experts. If someone found a Spanish olive jar over a foot tall. Is it worth very much Just curious, as I've only found them in pieces. Before I'm asked. I can't post a picture for a very days and it has been dated from mid 1500's up to the 1600's. For the sake of the curious, it was found outside US waters.

You came to the right place, Ed. I collect and sell pottery shards like a lot of people do. The Kang Hsai pottery shards found on the 1715 fleet sell for about $25 for a piece the size of a silver dollar especially if there is a bird or flower figure on the shard. I have seen a dozen shards mounted on a picture frame selling for hundreds. I have found early (mid 1500's) shards of olive jars that sell for about the same price. The biggest piece I found is a fraction of a mid 16th century olive jar pictured below. You can actually see the finger grooves of the potter that spun that jar. History comes alive! And I'm holding something that someone made 500 years ago. Completely intact olive jars like you describe go for $1,000 and up.

Pottery is the ceramic meterial which makes up potterywares, of which major types include earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. The palce where such wares are made is also called a pottery. Pottery also refers to the art or craft of the potter or the manufacture of pottery.

The context was right... I've found alot of European transfer print..but this is painted below the glaze.

GatorBoy, I'm impressed. That looks like a nice find. Did you find them on the beach or get them off a wreck site??

All beach finds.
The marked rim was not on a 1715 beach but an older site.
I would love to find more info on the mark.
Everything I've found so far leads to a small time frame of marked vessel finds..mostly from the Atocha.
My find was on the Treasure Coast.

GatorBoy, Here's what appears to be another piece of pottery, It sort of resembles one of the pictures you posted without the neck on the pottery.

I noticed that you think your pottery is 1622 era. What makes you think that it is, if it was found outside the Keys? I'm just curious and you may have found pottery from that era and I'd like to hear more.

The olive jar rim with the stamped mark as well as the dark chard found with it are the only pieces I belive can be identified as 1600's.
That is because of my research on the site..as well as my research on marked rims as a whole.
The style rim together with a fairly small window of time that rims appear to have been marked narrows down the probable date very well.
The other rim and chards are from a known 1715 fleet wreck beach.
If anyone can locate any info on marked rims of Spanish olive jars found in Florida from different time periods please chime in.
I would sure love to be able to trace that mark to a supplier and connect it to a manifest.

I may well do that.
Up til this point I've been able to be very successful in networking with some contacts I have as well as my own research ..but this one may be on controlled documents.
