I suspect you'd be better off doing something else with that $4500...

I won't disagree but I will say this... The reality is $4500 in cash will quickly turn in to $0 for most households. Having some of your savings in the form of pennies will force you not to spend it impulsively. This makes me think about my brother; the closest thing he's ever had to a savings account was a drag car he would race on the weekends. When he needed money for something unexpected, he would sell parts he had accumulated (eventually the car too). It wasn't efficient but it kept him from begging family members for money.

I'll give you that; if you don't already have some liquid savings, then sure, it might as well be in copper cents. I meant that if you don't need it as cash though, you'd be better off investing it, especially in the long term. That's obviously easier said than done though.
