Here is additional text from Indianapolis Journal,Indianapolis, Marion County, 8 January 1894 — Page 2:

"He lately has fallen heir to a legacy of $50,000 In Philadelphia, from where he returned Tuesday, having purchased a vessel called the Firefly, which he is having remodeled and will be called the Flora K. Pine. The party will sail under a passpcrt as a party of American excursionists to visit all places in south seas."

Oh, and this paper lists the amount of gold as $75,000, which is more believable. Sorry for the pay cut.

A quick Google search shows the average price of a troy ounce of Gold in 1894 is $18.94. If they had $775,000 of Gold in the boat, it weighed 40,919 troy ounces or 44,894 ounces or 2806 pounds. $75,000 of Gold would weigh 271 pounds then. Seems to make more sense.
