preserving timber

can anyone tell me how to preserve a piece of wood i found on the shore? it has a few iron bolts through it. its too big too keep indoors, so i want to leave it in the garden. any way to keep the
corroded bolts from cracking up? any way to keep the wood from waisting away?

Dont bother to preserve the wood.I have 4 large pieces i found on the beach that got washed out of the dunes that have been there for possibly hundreds of years.I found them 4 years ago after all our hurricanes.The wood is out in my artifact garden and it still looks the same as when i found it all.The squirrells dont even chew on it an i guess the termites hate it too.
