I thought of that too, all said and done ,it was to much time and effort in the thing.I went down to a farm supply store and purchased a Feed Scoop for $3.50 and drilled a bunch of holes in it. Works great in dry sand .

Well, that does look like it would work.
I was thinking of pipe tho with some thickness.
And a long handle so I wouldn't have to bend.
Have one in the making, will get some pics when done.

Haven't tried the steel edge yet, working on this so far.
Has a nice 1/2" thick grate of fibreglass filled polyethylene to push with your foot.
Should be solid. Will find out how the leading edge holds up.

Maybe the back is ABS, but is glass filled for strength.
Want to be able to put my foot in it for the hard sand.
The ones with wire baskets look feeble to me for that.
Working on handle now. Want it to float.

So far, I am thinking 1/2" pvc that is sealed on both ends for flotation.
No metal involved so if target is in there my MD will tell me.
Am thinking of a side handle and arm brace like on crutches.
The back is SOLID so a little foot power helps in hard pack - not too much
pressure on the handle. What do you folks think?

sounds like a great idea, might put a couple of holes in the end cap that way the water passes straight through as you lift it out of the water, that way sand isn't stuck in the bottom JMO

Thanks Sniffer, think I got that covered. 1/8" slats in the back.
Hope this pic works.
Will put 1/2" mesh there on back inside.
What do you think about a side handle?

side handle would probably work best, but the grate on the end won't be strong enough, i've stepped on them and broke out the center, also with the slats or slits in the bottom, coins have the ability to slide out through the slits, maybe a rounded end cap with 4 or 5 1/2 holes drilled in it. coins and rings can't get out but the sand and water should pass through and you can still use it as a sifter JMO

My foot will not go thru 4" hole.
Here is a pic of the done deal.
Some mods are to be done, but minor ones.
Ya think I could sell these at the beach?
What price should I ask? LOL

Tried the scoop yesterday on Sauvies Island on the Columbia river.
Actually, 2 scoops. My son had one also with a different detector.
I messed up and did not glue the top part on. Thought it would hold. LOL Did not. Kick plate worked good.
I was amazed at the outflow. The back had .080 mesh and I thought it would be a problem. But not.
Also I didn't know there were so many mexican beers. About 8 different kinds of bottle tops I found.
Dry sand went thru fast. The wet sand did not go thru very well. I was not in the water. Some shaking was required.
5/8" holes. Smaller than a dime. One quarter I got was very corroded. Cleaned off the tarnish and saw 185? .
Was a comerotive. Rats! The point of the trip was to see if the thing would work.
