Its pyrite. most people expect to see the typical fools gold. When it oxidizes it looks like cubes of iron. Hemetite is round and harder. I could crush this easily and the brassy color would show. Hemetite is harder its hard to break with a hammer. And it keeps it gunmetal color when polished. Closest visually would be magnatite. Once they break down into black sands they are harder to tell apart. http://www.sacredsource.com.au/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/HEMATITE.jpg

magnetite can have cube and rhombus shapes too.

magnetite-Fe3O4

pyrite-FeS2

pyrite rusts. magnetite doesn't. both are magnetic

pyrite will be shiny silver when fresh. and will quickly oxidize if gotten wet or high humidity.

chalcopyrite fools gold-CuFeS2. will be shiny gold color and quickly oxidize as well.

arsenopyrite-FeAsS. will be shiny dull grey. has arsenic... leaverite. also oxidizes.

...Magnetite being already oxidized (Fe3O4) will be black. and only degrade by mechanical means.

gold and other PM's "may" be found in any pyrite as an atomic replacement with sulfur or as inclusions.

Yep......and it's Pyrite...we have a lot of it...My blue bowl and pans all have rust spots...happens over night sometimes.
And like I said if I crushed this it would be nice and shiney.
If you guys want me to crush it I will ;)
Like I mentioned in another post if I was to do an assay of our concentarates it would keep me up at night

And please understand I am not arguing....

I have reports of local assays' that show ounces per POUND of gold locked up in sulfides

And some ore I crushed but need to finish processing. There was no visable gold when I found it ,but my detector caught a wiff of something. There is visable gold under a microscope.
One day I will run into someone who can help me process these materials. I don't have the equipment, or experience so I just stockpile it.

wonder how much gold is in the pyrite, came across a page that shows if it were to run just 0.25%
a ton is 32000 Ounces, that would be 80 Oz, or after converting to troy it's 73 Oz of gold per ton.

A lot most likely. There are mines in the area that reported stupendous value in the pyrites. Like I said i'm stockpiling. i'll get an assay by the end of the summer for sure.
anyone that has experience please pm me

they report free millin gold with the pyrites n arsenopyrites, if i run into pyrites i usally run out of values,
im sure the ores up north run about the same as here, simalar geology, up north there was just massive deposits of pyrites with the ore bodys so you would get some enrichments but most gold was in the quartz.

if you cant see gold when its crushed with the naked eye its not really worth it, my 2 cents

do a streak test on your rock that will remove all doubt as to what it is.

Looks to me like it's actually limonite after pyrite. I've found a good many pieces just like that. And every thing I've found that is like that in my area is limonite after pyrite.

They were processing free milling gold ...in stamps and by hand crushing here. Our deposits are not like the deposits you dig herb. We have seam diggins...and lots of decomposed pockets...they most definitely processed the sulfides for value as well.
The Black oak mine is right down the road it had rich free milling pockets. The Alhambra mine is a district over...they hit a pocket in 1940 500 k in one pocket.
These mines also crushed and leached the lower grade ores for the. Value in the sulfides.
