I had the chance to detect a 40.000 square metre site where a quarry is enlarged. This is near a roman sanctuary so i gave it a try. The top soil was removed before so i know 90% of the finds were removed, but the rest would be in good condition because it's under plow deepth. :icon_thumleft:
This area is between two villages where american troops fought hard to chase the german defender.
Unfortunately i hit the american outpost line.... So i gave up after digging too much unwanted stuff. I managed some real nice finds on the other end of this area. Top find is the 12 Heller 1759 in very good condition and the US (ink?)bottle. Just unreal to find this bottle undamaged with the plug still in and half filled... US Padlock still wearing olive drab paint and pot i need an id urgent. Cru! :hello:

I like the glazed earthenware face!.

That large storage jar is amazing, it looks Roman but I have never seen that type of footing before, it could be a local Germanic type. I have no idea really, other that I would bet it's Roman.

I guess it's the same theme. These jars were often used for holy water by farmers. Found a similar shard with face last year. Weird... :dontknow:

Looks roman, yes. But never seen the design of the base before. If this thing is roman i'm on something... With that base i can't imagine general use.

Interesting stuff! I certainly would dig very carefully if I thought I might hit a mortar or artillery shell! =) My grandfather fought with the 28th Infantry Division "the Bloody Bucket" or "Blutiger Eimer" - and was wounded in the Hurtgen forest battles at Schmidt and Vossenack.
