Some quartz has gold, most does not. A good place to start finding gold is where it has been found in the past.

Take Aufisher's advice. I used to love panning in the Llano uplift area of Texas. Lots of quartz, but little gold. But try it all. It will surprise you where you find color...

Austin ,have you ever tried the Marble Falls area? Specifically Balcone's Ranch.
