Hello to all. Just starting out. Have a pan and have some land with an active stream running through it.

Been watching YouTube videos to see others panning and several folks seem to get all excited when they find black sand in their pans. Not sure why as they do not fully explain it.

Can someone answer this for me? What does black sand mean when panning for gold?

Thanks!

Blacksand is made up of iron oxides and ores mostly hemetite and magnatite. It is a heavy mineral like gold and tends to settle in the same places that gold does. So blacksand is a good indicator that gold may be present in the same area. You won't always find gold with blacksand but you will almost always find blacksand with gold. So when folks get excited about blacksand in their pan that is why. BTW magnatite is magnetic and can be removed with a magnet. Hope thios clears it up for you and welcome to the net pancrazee.

Good Luck!

Pancrazee, welcome to tnet! Can I suggest you add your city/state/country to your profile and maybe info about your prospecting gear or experience? These things will help others guide you.
