What years were the mis-stamped large-cents(the 14-15 star variety). And what is the rarity, were all the pennies of a given year mis-stamped this way or is this a unique misstrike ??

The reason that I ask this is that, I recently dug an 1842 LC, and the stars aren't lining up right compared to the other big pennies I own. Maybe I am just crazy. Any input is good input.

If I read your post right, the year 1817 had both 13 and 15 stars. Not an error but because new states were added. Mint went back to 13 stars in later years.

In 1842 the tip of the LIBERTY band pointed between two stars. If compared with a 1841, the tip pointed at a star. So many different varieties of old cents, you really need a book to keep up with them.

thanx, prospector, wasn't sure if I had a wierd one, I haven't seen too many. It's not a rare date, so I'm probably gonna clean it, just wanted to make sure I wasn't gonna clean a good one.
