I tend to agree with you Toecutter. I use to trap in my youth and never saw a trap like this, BUT STILL, that was a good guess.
The finger, ( or thumb ), latch on the side does favor a purse of some type. Maybe it was a civil war equivalent of today's "Man purse" or fanny pack ?
It is interesting and I will continue looking for possibilities. That thumb lever/latch is SO familiar, yet I can't remember from where
