5-31f.jpg Story tellers. My brother came over to my camp in the Wichitas for a little while and this is what we do, tell stories to the kids and grandkids around the fire. He's Kiowa Apache, and the great, great, great grandson of Kiowa chief Stumbling Bear, and the great, great grandson of the Kiowa Apekaum. Apekaum means 'coal' in Kiowa and Apekaum got his name cause one day they killed a white man on a wagon and Apekaum was the first to touch the wagon, so it was his, and then they saw it was filled with coal. I have never figured out if that was a joke, calling him that. Wasn't a lot of of need for coal at the time. His ancestors were savages, and mine were far more refined, as they were members of the civilized tribes. Still, we both know stories about out families that date back to the early 1800's, thanks to oral tradition. Unfortunately most of the grandkids aren't really interested, but as you can see, we're there ready to tell them when they are.
