I finally made it out for a few hours detecting and the ground was good and thawed everywhere except the deeper woods. I found a variety of things including a 1864 Nova Scotia one cent and a super creepy iron/lead lady in a dress. The find of the day (and year so far) for me was a 1861 New Brunswick half cent. I’ve always had my sights on finding someday the rare 1862 Nova Scotia one cent so it was a shock when I got home and found out what i had. I thought when I dug it that it was just the similar style Nova Scotia half cent. Here’s some quick info on them for anyone who doesn’t know...
“The rare New Brunswick half cent was not a required denomination by the province, however, 222,800 were produced by the Royal Mint in error. Most were melted, but a few thousand that managed to survive before the error was known were believed to become added to the Nova Scotia half cent bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia.”
Thanks for looking and I’m glad I finally got out to do some digging! [emoji16][emoji106]

Found another good little piece written about them...
“However through an error half cents were struck for New Brunswick and included in the first lot for Nova Scotia. They were returned unused, but some must have gotten away as an occasional one is found in the hands of a collector. A New Brunswick one half cent of 1861 is quite a unique piece and now extremely rare and valuable. It is a coin which was never officially in existence.”

Ah C'mon now ! " her Majesty is a pretty nice girl"
Thanks for the photo !

I probably could get a better photo but I’m terrified to touch it. HaHa
I dug other old cooper coins from that area that were so brittle after drying out that they crumbled apart and were completely ruined. For now i gently put it in my display case. I’m hearing a few good ideas to gently get the crust of the back that I may try down the road! [emoji16][emoji106]

Congrats on the finds and especially the rare 1861 New Brunswick Half Cent! I would recommend to give the Half Cent a quick bath in Acetone to arrest the verdigris, then rinse with distilled water, pat dry, then soak in Mineral Oil for a week or two. Once any corrosion, grime. verdigris and encrustation is loosened by the Mineral Oil, you can pick a lot of what remains on the coin with a green Rose Thorn or toothpick. Once you are satisfied that it is as clean as it will ever get, dip the coin in the Mineral Oil one last time, then rinse with distilled water, pat dry, then place the coin in a 2x2 protective holder. The Mineral Oil that stays on the coin, will protect it from further degradation and preserve it.
