A week ago me and my detecting partner Angelo were detecting without any luck and I found a new pile of rocks in the woods. We spent a couple of hours at this 'new' site and had to leave. We went back yesterday and spend 4 hours there with out XP Deus detectors! It is the MOST awesome Metal Detector I have ever used. Over the two days I found a small Batwing buckle 5 large cents 17_ _, 1807, 1810 1817, 1817 - Angelo got an 1818. We got several HUGE silver plated buttons, other HUGE coat Buttons, Tombac Buttons, cast pewter buttons. We also pulled a couple of small brass buckles a wonderful tiny ladies belt buckle, a cool pewter spoon. I found my find of the year so far - one of the rarest Washington Inaugural Buttons around. Similar to WI 14 on page 395 of Albert's Blue Button Book, published in 1976. It was an R-6 3-5 known. It does have the shank but it is flattened on the back. Likely more have been found since then but it is still extremely rare! Photos of it right out of the ground and after it was cleaned! It has a different edge and may be a unique specimen.

Awesome find and a very well deserved congrats! I looked up the George Washington Inaugural Buttons and although I found one Variety of the GWI 14, I was unable to get anymore information since when I click on it, it then asks for a password. Therefore, you must be a member of the site but I don't see a link to join. I am guessing that you have to contact the owner/author of the site. If you go to the site, just scroll down to the pics of all of the known GWI buttons and of course it is the 14th listed.

Congrats on what may be a third sub variety of the GWI 14, that site lists a 14A and 14B, which have different border designs than yours, so perhaps contacting the owner of that site might be the prudent thing to do! :)

You know it's a rare GW when it looks nothing like a GW! ....as per what we have seen posted here over the past decade. Also being as rare as it is a new sub variety would not really be that much of a surprise, but definitely adds to the find as you now play a little role in documenting the history.

Alright, Robert Silverstein, one of the top experts in Washington buttons tells me that this is different than either the GWI 14 A and B and very well be unique! Value - no idea! He also said he thinks it may be an 1800 anniversary inaugural. He is going to do a little more research into it.

Yes we POUNDED the site - after-all it is only a 15' X 20" pile of rocks and kitchen area. Stopped after 4 hours the other day and no new finds for a while.

I just got an e-mail and was told it is definitely an R-7 meaning it is the rarest of rare - likely a unique specimen! I am overwhelmed with my own find! Here is a better image of it! Washington GWI 14a zzzz.jpg
