Going to take my wife and daughter out to hit a public spot I scouted this afternoon after work. It's along an civil war axis of advance and just outside protected property. So hope to find something. Maybe I'll end up with another Shlitz bottle cap or a Chuc-E-Cheez token.

Good luck, but a word of caution, even though you are on public property, be cognizant of the local ordnances regarding detecting, especially regarding removal of relics and be very aware of the boundary to the protected property line, especially if it is federal land. In my neck of the woods (No VA), detecting any known CW sites can be practically accomplished only by gaining permissions from private landowners whose property occupies the site in question if you want to recover period relics. Very hard to detect even public parkland and school grounds regardless of whether you are recovering items of potential archeological value (extremely broadly defined) or simply coin shooting or looking for modern jewelry. I know you probably know the rules, but not knowing your detecting location, what you describe doing can't be legally done where I live as ridiculous and sad as that sounds. So my caution extends to those newer folks who may not realize the world of trouble the can inadvertently find themselves in. Happy hunting - don't intend to be a debbie downer, I am genuinely happy for you that you have what sounds like a great relic hunting opportunity.
