Got out today for a spur of the moment brief hunt on Long Island, NY. Went back to a place that has produced lots of things from coins, buttons, and relics ranging from the late 1700's through late 1800's. Didn't have much other than some square nails and a button. After this button was dug, I could see a nice design and some writing so I put it in my coin pocket in my jeans till I was able to take a closer look at home. I gave it a quick brush and see most of the lettering and started to do some searching on google. Come to find out what I had shoved in my little pocket was a 1781-1783 Dragoons button from the Revolutionary War, worn by a British Loyalist. Been trying to do some reading and research and came across a few articles. Never sell anything I find but wondering if anyone here might know the rarity and/or value of these. Does not seem to be too many of them found or in existence.

Thanks - In touch with someone about best methods to preserve it from further deterioration. Always a tough call messing with something so fragile.

Great and rare button. DO NOT use liquids on it. Try a dry toothbrush or some of the Andre's pencils, or a toothpick. I would only put watered down Elmer's white glue with water on it.

Spectacular find! My life goal is to find a rev war button! You've found a rarity within a rarity it seems! Despite needing some preservation that button is looking pretty good! Very cool!

Thank you!! I surely needs some preserving to prevent further deterioration. Just nervous about doing so. Not that I would sell it but does preserving ruin any value? Although I suppose not intervening, I could deteriorate and not have any value. Such a dilemma

I am leaning towards the Elmers Glue or Poly. Don Troiani recommended polyurethane so may test that on some not so nice buttons.

If its made of brass letting it sit left alone will make no difference in the future. It's pewter buttons than crumble on you. Not brass.

Exactly. There's no panic button needed, don't even need a button. It will stay the same unless it's messed with.

That's a good one for sure.

that's a very seldom seen button, any condition is highly collectable. Big thumbs up on that one!

Would you or anyone know where you could find out rarity/value of these buttons? Not that I want to sell it but would be nice to know it's value and it's rarity.

Although it was found shank less it required little cleaning and seems very durable- no sign of crumbling at all. I didn’t apply any preservative whatsoever.
