Soo, I originally just took a picture of this woodpecker, but I think this other stuff is pretty interesting when put with it. These are all taken within a couple thousand feet.

Just this rock..so I think they call that spalling when rock flakes off. Caused by heat/cold contraction and general weathering I believe. It certainly looks suggestive..but one must be conservative eh?

If a sign, was it made post fire? That rock looks blackened.was it blackened by the forest fire? When was the forest fire? To me it looks like there was a forest fire but I am a bit out of it just now.

What would account for the placement and position of the spall chips on the ground...could they fall off naturally that way or could wind snow or water move them?

If some of the other rocks have similar work, how do the spall chips look on the ground near them?

Your woodpecker..seems shaded. How and why? Just a result of a spall..or was some further work done.

With this sort of sign I might think about these sorts of things before deciding it is a sign. Also see if its beak or other appendages leads you to another sign.

I have seen spall chip signs that were real,(though not primary or critical) but a lot of them are just spalling.

Take a critical look. Too bad about the fire, seems like a likely area for a tree sign or two.

I will look at your other rocks later on. Glancing at one it seemed to have a groove in it.

And welcome to Tnet..hope you are having some fun investigating these seeming anomalies!
