It is a coolish day, must hunt. Could be 100 degrees next week.
Got the ROTC Pin at Hud today and fed the cat too.
The circle of metal in the center of the object is almost as big as a quarter.
Best to all.

Reserve Officers Training Corps. They are at Universities. Tuition is paid by the gov't and you go into the military after school. Not sure when it started. Gary

The concept for colleges and universities to include military tactics as part of their curriculum began in 1862 and became the framework for the proposal to create the ROTC in 1915. The first ROTC unit was established at Harvard in 1916.

I used to wear one of those in college (1960's).

By the way, ROTC does not pay for college tuition.

:)

In 1964, following a decline in ROTC enrolment, Congress standardised the program across the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and authorised the department secretaries to pay for ROTC participants’ educational expenses, including tuition, fees, and books. The number of students eligible for such assistance was capped at 5,500 for each military department.

Arising from protests during the 1990s about the Department of Defense’s admission and separation policy for gay people (commonly known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, or DADT) Congress passed new legislation. From 1996 federal funding was denied to any higher education institution that prohibited or prevented the operation of ROTC units, recruiting activity, or student participation in ROTC on its campus.

That was repealed in 2010 and, thereafter, federal funding (scholarships and other financial assistance) from the three military departments resumed on condition that the participating student committed to acceptance of a service appointment in the US military after graduation. That commitment is optional.

I stand by my statement.

There were a few people who got extra money but not many.

:)

Ref: Congressional Research Service "In Focus" bulletin - Defense Primer: Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (updated November 18, 2020):

"In 1964, following a decline in ROTC enrollment, Congress passed the ROTC Vitalization Act (P.L. 88-647). The Act standardized the program across the Army, Navy, and Air Force and authorized the department secretaries to pay for ROTC participants’ educational expenses, including tuition, fees, and books. It capped the number of participants who could receive financial assistance at 16,500 (5,500 for each department)."
