I think this place was some sorta military camp from the mid 1800s, all the way through turn of the century. No largies this time, but did manage to pull some interesting finds. Barrel of a percussion-cap pistol (predecessor of flintlock technology - began circa 1820s), sterling thimble, buckles, buttons, spoons and the usual unidentified items.

BTW ground freeze is no excuse to call it for the season. (Unless you hunt manicured property...)

It was 60*F today on Long Island. But the sporadic rain ruined it for me. I'd rather have snow this time of year than rain. You've inspired me to go get the old pick-ax out of the garage and detect even in the frozen dead of winter. Who cares if the ground is frozen solid! That gun is awesome by the way, maybe 1840's! And nice little piece of silver too!:treasurechest::thumbsup:

Nice assortment of finds, liking the silver thimble and the barrel, congrats on all the finds digging in those conditions.
I've dug in the past one of those notched grommets and still not sure of it's intended use.

VERY cool pistol find! I see a 5 round stripper clip in the picture of the relics on the plate at about the 9 o'clock position. These were used for rifles like the 1903 Springfield, 1917 Enfield or K98 German Mauser. You finding any spent rifle brass?

Nice field pics too by the way.

Very cool finds. I found a pistol barrel like that a couple years ago. Try to check the sides for a liege mark I was able to trace mind to the early 1800s, and was made in Germany. It was a single shot percussion pistol. Keep at it, I bet there are more finds waiting for you.
