Salmon Falls Bridge

Went up to the salmon falls bride yesterday with my pan and a bucket. Spent maybe 3 hours crevassing and recovered 5 or 6 matchhead sized flakes out of about 5 gallons of material. Literally maybe 75 yards upstream from the bridge.

If you live here in the motherload area of california that's how easy it can be to find a little bit of good 'yella gold'. Am planning on headed a little further upstream to get out of the heavily traveled area next time and see if the color improves. Updates to come.

Ya I love it down there. Even getting skunked down there would be better then just sittin around home on the couch even, ain't been skunked there yet though. Been down there quite a bit the last few weeks. As a newbie prospector its a great little learning area. With the potential for some good sized pieces of that 'yella gold'. A newbie can't really ask for more than that.

So do you guys just park on the side of the road to hit spots like these? The GSP (georgia state patrol) and local police tend to be a bit pissy about it here .

There are several spots for parking between the fee area for the rafters to pull out or the widened shoulders near the base of the bridge. Haven't had any negative interations as a result of parking on the shoulder but should it become a problem I'm more than willing to use the fee parking lot.

That's the plan. Probably tomorrow I'll head up that way on foot with my pans and see what I can see.

Sluicing aloud? How far up/downstream?

Hike up and around the corner to sluice. There is a nice spot about 1/4 mile up. Some bouldering required

I will be stopping to visit a cousin in Newcastle while on my way to Oregon from Arizona in a month or so and would like to check out the topic area.
Are there any restrictions I need to know about?
Park (not parking) permit needed?
Sluice, buckets and digging tools OK?
Suggestions for other areas (within a reasonable radius) would be appreciated too!
I see there is a prospecting supply store in Auburn. Might they also steer me to likely spots?

Just realized this is a panning forum so maybe no sluices allowed??

Hand and pans at bridge. Sluicers Ok upstream. Hydraulic and suction dredging at your own discretion.

Its been awhile, but Pioneer Mining Supply in Auburn are up-to-date on good spots to prospect, and are knowledgeable about current regulations locally. They also advocate for mining rights, so a small donation would be appreciated. In short, a must stop on your way to Oregon..

I've found small amounts of color in both. Up the bank work the cracks and crevices in the bed rock. Cracks that run parallel to the flow of water behind big boulders or rocks have been good producers of color for me so far. Whether on the bank or hills doesn't seem to make much difference in the amount of color I've seen.
